The “secret” incompatibility Apple did not disclose between the new MacBook Pro and the iPhone 7

The new range of professional notebooks have only normal USB connectivity via Thunderbolt 3 USB-C type, while the popular phone uses standard USB.

Apple unveiled the new MacBook Pro, its range of portable devices whose main innovations are two: Touch Bar, a touch bar at top of the keyboard, which will be fully customisable; and fingerprint reader Touch ID which users can use to make purchases via Apple Pay.

The company insisted that it is the best ever designed MacBook Pro, the most advanced laptop in Apple’s history. Phrases also heard during the presentation of the iPhone in July, its last terminal. Tim Cook said last September 7: “It is the best phone we’ve ever created.” However, the “two best creations” of Cupertino keep each other incompatible which by the way Apple preferred to ignore during the presentation.

The “problem” is that users can not connect the iPhone 7 to the new MacBook Pro. There is a tiny incompatibility between ports. This is not an overseen by Apple, who have already released two new cables because why not?

The new range of MacBook Pro feature only Thunderbolt connectivity 3 USB-C type whilst the iPhone 7 USB charging connection “normal”, so if you need to connect the terminal to the new laptop to transfer files, for example, will be impossible unless you buy the new cable.

For this reason, Apple has already put up for sale on their website USB adaptor USB-C, priced at £22, or the user can also purchase a Lightning connector cable to USB-C, priced at £35. Another option is the Thunderbolt adaptor 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2, £50 to connect Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices to the NewMacBook Pro.

Apple has decided to phase out this type of ‘old’ port. This has been done in the new Macbook but did not do it on the iPhone 7. The fact is now that Thunderbolt requires users to “readjust” without a previous warn.

The new MacBook Pro introduces Touch Bar, a secondary display with Multi-Touch

The Cupertino giants have presented this Thursday the new range of professional notebooks, much thinner and lighter, with a fingerprint reader Touch ID to make purchases with Apple Pay, and a larger “trackpad”.

In the end Apple has not surprised. We knew a lot about the new MacBook Pro. Details that these days had been leaking and, in the end, were well under way.

The new laptop debuts with Touch Bar, a keyboard with a faster response, Force Touch and an audio system with twice the dynamic range.

The new MacBook Pro is the thinnest and lightest in the history of the company, which has been very proud of their new creation that incorporates a revolutionary interface in which the traditional row of function keys disappear and gives way to the Touch bar, a bright Multi-Touch Retina with better quality, brighter and a more colourful screen. But not only that: it is the most powerful Apple device, with dual- and quad-core sixth generation, up to 2.3 times more graphical powerful than the previous generation, ultra-fast SSDs and up to four 3-port Thunderbolts.

The Touch Bar offers users more control options and adapts depending on whether you are using the system or applications. For example, it serves to show the tabs and bookmarks in Safari, access to “emoji” in messages, edit images in the blink of an eye or move back and forth on videos and photos.

“This week we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Apple portable and, over the years, each generation has incorporated new innovations and benefits”, said Philip Schiller, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Apple. “So nothing better than this year to introduce a new generation of MacBook Pro. With the revolutionary Touch Bar, comfort system Touch ID, the best screen in the history of Mac, spectacular performance, upgraded audio system, ultra-fast storage and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity in a portable Pro also thinner and lighter than never”.

The new MacBook Pro combines a completely redesigned look with a full metal ‘unibody’ housing structure, which results in an incredibly robust and compact portable, yet thin and light. With a thickness of only 14.9 mm, the MacBook Pro 13-inch is 17% thinner and 23% more compact than the previous generation model. In addition, it weighs only 1.36 kg, 200 grams less.

The 15-inch with a thickness of only 15.5 mm, is 14% thinner and 20% more compact than the previous version, with a total weight of only 1.8 kg, it weighs about 200 grams less.

The Touch ID system was well known, so far by users of iPhone and iPad, but is now integrated into the power button. Once you register your fingerprint Touch ID on your MacBook Pro, you can unlock your Mac, change user account and make secure purchases with Apple Pay online by simply moving a finger.

The MacBook Pro mounts a powerful processor, next-generation graphics, a SSD ultra-fast, high-speed memory and an advanced thermal architecture to deliver professional quality performance.

Intel Core i5 dual-core eDRAM sixth generation, Intel Core i7 dual-core Intel Core i7 eDRAM and quad-core processors deliver power, professional and efficient consumption. The new 15-inch MacBook Pro includes Radeon Pro up to 2.3 times more powerful than the previous generation, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro includes an Intel Iris Graphics system up to twice as fast as before. All models incorporate SSDs with speeds over 3Gbps and connectivity Thunderbolt 3, which combines data transfer, sequential read and up to twice the bandwidth of video on a single port, allowing users to work with a 5K screen and connect their MacBook Pro to the power with a single cable.

Sierra works with macOS, Touch Force has Trackpad, a much larger keyboard and more responsive, more powerful and realistic sound, thanks to speakers with twice the dynamic range and an enhanced bass.

Instagram is installed on Windows 10

The popular application presents problems uploading an image if the device doesn’t feature a touch screen, such as a tablet.

instagram-app-phoneasylum

No more having to send an email with that beautiful picture you have taken with your camera, which previously you’ve had to put on the computer’s hard drive, to upload it to Instagram as the popular application of photographs reaches the PC. Although not for everyone…

One of the things that are missing from the app of Facebook is that we don’t not have a computer version. So far, the user has handled the application only from mobile. However, the company has designed a version for Windows 10.

Stakeholders and Instagram can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. However, users have already been reporting malfunction. And it is that you can only upload an image if the device has a touch screen, such as a tablet. By contrast, in the desktop it does not work.

Fuel to the fire: Samsung certified its own batteries

It is an uncommon practice in the industry of mobile devices…

spiralbinder-2016-phoneasylum

A new black page opens in the story of one of the largest consumer technology companies in the world. While we still don’t know what causes technical problems on one of its flagship terminals, the Note 7, which recently had to be removed to prevent further cases of fires among its owners, the South Korean giant, Samsung was responsible for certifying the safety of their own batteries, an uncommon practice in the industry.

Safety assurance made on the batteries used in mobile devices came from their own research laboratories and its headquarters, according to “The Wall Street Journal.” Typically, manufacturers of such electronic devices need approval from any of the 28 laboratories certified by the CTIA, the organisation responsible for examining those related to mobile telephones and other products.

The tests must ensure due to compliance of the standards established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers to market their products in the US. However, Samsung is the only manufacturer that uses its own facilities to carry out this verification. This situation has highlighted the suspicion about a possible failure in safety during the manufacturing process of the batteries.

Samsung has said, meanwhile, that tests internally revealed no problems in the Galaxy Note 7, which had to be withdrawn from the markets where it was made available (including the UK) for registering cases of ignition. Apple, Huawei, Lenovo and Nokia are some firms that have safety certificates issued by CTIA. After this event, which can generate losses of 10,000 million to the company, Samsung recently said they will make “significant changes” to ensure the quality of their products.

While the problems are clarified, the Government of South Korea has begun its own investigation to find the causes of ignitions on Note 7’s. The Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL, of ALARA), a state agency, is working with five devices affected in China provided by Samsung Electronics on Thursday, they said industry sources to Yonhap news agency.

For now, and to avoid further problems, Samsung has announced it will offer replacement phones to users of said terminal with international flights from South Korea, after the US and other countries banned the device in aircraft. “We have opened a counter at Incheon International Airport so that users can change their Note 7 for a terminal of another model”, told Efe a spokesman for the company based in Seoul, without specifying whether this measure will be extended to airports In other countries.

Google and Facebook will build the fastest submarine cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong

The two Internet giants expects its launch by 2018. It will have an approximate cost of $400 million.

google-facebook-phoneasylum

Google and Facebook have joined forces to build a submarine cable of 120 terabits per second (Tbps). A 12,800 kilometer cable which will connect Los Angeles to Hong Kong and become the fastest in the Pacific Ocean.

“Google’s mission is to connect people and information in the world, providing fast and reliable infrastructure,” says the Internet king in a blog, which announces that with the company of Mark Zuckerberg, they will “build the first system direct submarine cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong with high capacity”.

The cable will cost approximately $400 million and intends to distribute its capacity in five fibre pairs. All those involved in investment, will have its own cable portion so they can have their own private traffic and maintain it.

The new submarine cable will become the sixth in which Google takes part. One of them, Faster, currently holds the record for the highest capacity and speed in the Pacific Ocean, but with the new plans of Google, the development of new cable which is scheduled to go into operation in 2018, Faster will take the second place.

Submarine cables are one of the most used ways to connect different parts of the world. Without going any further, last May, Facebook and Microsoft reached an agreement to deploy a new submarine using a fibre optic cable of next generation, called Marea, which will communicate Spain and the US from 2017. In addition, it will be managed and operated by a new subsidiary of Telefónica Telxius infrastructure.

This submarine cable will be 6,600 kilometers long connecting the United States, through the major hub connectivity in Northern Virginia, with Southern Europe. Specifically, Virginia Beach will join with Sopelana Vizcaya and then reach the Middle East.

Alternatives to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

After the fiasco of the latest technological device by South Korean firm, users have other devices on the market in order to replace and forget the Galaxy Note 7.

note-7-firephoneasylum

After Samsung announced last Tuesday that they were gonna completely  stop the manufacture and sale of its latest device, the Galaxy Note 7 because of the problems of combustion of these terminals, many users are now left without a phone. The South Korean company has sold more than 2 million Note 7’s. Customers now must look for alternatives.

The first of them, and not a bad idea is the fact that you can still trust the brand. Samsung has already made it clear that the battery issues pertain only to Note 7 not the rest of their devices. Therefore, users have at their disposal the Galaxy S7.

These terminals, launched in February, remain the “jewels” of the company. The only difference is almost I’d say… the size (5.1 inches vs. 5.5), then following we have the S6 and S6 Edge.

Curved edges, resistant to water and dust, processor Exynos 890, 4GB of RAM, batteries of 3000 mAh and 3600 (in the case of the Edge), rapid charging system, possibility to expand the memory with MicroSD cards, camera with Dual Pay pixel Sensor and Samsung are some of the S7 features.

Facebook presents Workplace, the social platform for companies.

The company has announced the launch of this new service, independent of the popular social network, which has worked for a year in tests under the name of Facebook at Work.

facebook-workplace-phoneasylum

Facebook just announced the launch of its social platform for companies, Workplace, which has worked for a year in tests under the name of Facebook at Work and it has already kicked off with thousand customers.

Workplace by Facebook is a kind of professional version of the social network created by Mark Zuckerberg that aims to contact all employees of a company or organisation through the phone sites.

“On Facebook, for many years, we have had an internal version of our ‘app’ to manage our company. We have seen that in the same way Facebook can be connected with friends and family, it can also be connected with your coworkers” the company explained the company in a note circulated.

Of the more than 1,000 organizations worldwide that use Workplace, people have created nearly 100,000 groups and the main countries where it is used are India, United States, Norway, United Kingdom and France, whose reception has been very good.  For this reason, Workplace will be available to any company or organization that wants to use it.

The platform “has the ambition to change the way of working for businesses, to give voice to everyone, to offer all employees, even those who until now did not have an email, the same communication tools are using in their private life”, Facebook explained to Efe.

The service is independent of Facebook, but works similar: features a wall, chat, live broadcasts (Facebook Live), groups, automatic translations or voice and video over IP.

Integrated into the technological system of each company, employees can access the platform via iOS, Android or a browser.

Codorniou said that the service is easy to use, requires no training and improves business productivity by making internal communication easier.

The company has worked for two years in the development of the platform, which aims to “connect via mobile phone to all employees of a company regardless of their position of responsibility, and tested with real customers in the past year, which he worked with under the name of Facebook at Work.

Service prices will be set according to the number of employees of organisations: $3 per month for companies up to a thousand employees, $2 for between 1,001 and 10,000 and $1 per user templates for more than 10,000 professionals. The non-profit organisations and educational institutions may use Workplace for free.

According Codorniou, rates are “reasonable” considering that an email account usually costs $6 or $7 per employee. The management has stated that the monthly bill will depend on the level of use: the company will only pay if the employees use the platform.

About a the organisations that already work with the Workplace by Facebook, include Danone, Booking.com, Starbucks in the US, Oxfam and Save the Children.

In addition, the network has indicated that it has launched a partnership program with partners such as Deloitte Digital, Edelman, Weber Shandwick and Ketchum to promote the implementation of the platform among its customers.

Samsung finally suspended the manufacture and sales of the Galaxy Note 7

The South Korean company urges owners of the devices, both the original and replaced, to turn them off and stop using them.

galaxy-note7_asylum

Neither sales nor production, death. One of the most advanced mobile devices has been one of the biggest fiascos…set to be remembered in the industry of consumer technology. Samsung has confirmed on Tuesday the “complete cessation” of production of the smart phone Galaxy Note 7 after repeated problems with their batteries, even in some substitution models that were launched to try to sort out the crisis. This terminal called “phablet” will eventually be discontinued before Samsung meets two months after its release.

The South Korean firm has taken this decision by the continuous security concerns about the risks that exist of possible explosions and ignition in the device. The first consequences are clear: the company’s shares have fallen by 8.04 percent on the Seoul Stock Exchange.

To date more than a hundred cases are estimated, although officially been recognised in about 35 units. “We have recently adjusted the volume of production to initiate a thorough and overall situation research, but we want to make safety of consumers our priority so, we decided to stop the production of the Note 7», say sources in a statement that give no report so far of the full reason for the problem. So far little is known.

“We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate  the cases recently reported on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Because consumer safety remains our top priority, Samsung calls on all distributors worldwide to halt sales and program replacements while the investigation is carried out”. “We remain committed to working with regulatory authorities and will take all necessary steps to remedy the situation. Consumers, whether those who own an original Note 7 or a unit that has been replaced must shut it down, stop using the device and benefit from the available solutions”, added the same sources.

The mess was mounted, at first, when Samsung announced the suspension of worldwide sales as well as new phones that served as replacement and began distributing a few weeks ago, while advancing the research on ignition causes affecting devices due to defective batteries. But the crisis has caught fire even causing one of the biggest headaches that are remembered in this industry.

Samsung decided on Monday the willing to start a “temporary adjustment” to ensure that consumer safety was “top priority”. Then they doubted that strategy and now it has been confirmed, they have completely stopped the production. Despite this situation, which could result in losses of more than ten billion dollars in the income statement according to several reports, the South Korean electronics giant has said that are working “diligently” with regulatory authorities to solve the problem. However, the Note family, which debuted in 2011 with an original size and very cutting-edge functionality through the use of a stylus, will quite possibly pass to history.

At the moment the actual extent of the loss for the brand image its unknown and whether consumers will remember in the future this murky episode or forget it. Samsung began selling the phone last August, but in early September announced an unprecedented withdrawal following reports of more than thirty cases of ignition in some terminals in several countries. The recall was followed in mid-September, however, several media have reported that owners have suffered fires in South Korea, the United States and Taiwan.

Last week two of the biggest mobile operators in the United States, AT & T and T-Mobile US, stopped selling new units theoretically unaffected by the fault as five new cases of fire had been reported in that country. In Europe, where sales were expected before October 28th, Vodafone and Orange announced the discontinuation of sales.

A 12 year old boy spent more than £90,000 on YouTube

The child and his 15 year old friend hired by mistake the AdWords service

YouTube-social-phoneayslum

A bill of more than 90 thousand British pounds for trying to be a  “youtuber”. This is what happened to a child of 12 years, which has seen how Google has charged to his (or his parents’) account such amount by the concept of advertising their website. According to the child’s family, which already have a solicitor reviewing the subject-, an error occured because the minor attempted to charge for content that was uploaded with a friend through their Youtube channel but they were wrong and charged on AdWords, Google offers the service to promote and position web content.

All the children wanted was to be “youtubers” and make known their channel on musical content. However, they did not realise their mistake, and they instead of earning have to pay. What they did was hire inserting advertising for a page, so the children began receiving charges by Google, in order to promote to visitors. For this service, Google explains it is necessary to provide an email account, a bank, and a website. By not having to enter an ID, the kid started trading, no need to verify their age, according to the version of the family.

However, in early August, the bank warned the boy’s mother that there were coming charges to their account from Google Ireland, headquarters of the multinational in Europe. The account began to receive charges from 50 to 18,000 euros in a week, but the worst was the one who came last September 28, for 78,000 euros. With this in less than a month, the family came to get a bill of 100,000 euros.

Once the child’s parents knew the history, contents disappeared and the account was deactivated. Still, the family of this child still not explained how it is possible that a kid is able to activate this service without an adult sharing responsibility. The family already has a lawyer who will help them out of this confrontation with the large multinational.

Scientists and computer experts of Microsoft seeking ways to “solve” cancer

The idea of this program is not a cure, but to give oncologists tools to respond better to the disease and provide more effective treatments.

phoneayslummm

With laboratory test tubes, plastic cups and masks the offices of Microsoft have been very busy with what before was creaky keys and plastic cups dedicated to serve tea and coffee only. There are many differences between a lab and the Microsoft offices but a few days ago, workers claimed to be very close to being a laboratory.

And it’s not because they’re developing a new system, but because the computer giant has proposed themselves to “solve” cancer. Microsoft will allocate scientists and computer experts to end this disease. With this program, called Project Hanover, it is stated that Microsoft will not seek a vaccine or a new palliative care. They will simply try to provide better tools to those who truly seek a cure: oncologists.

In an article posted on its website, Microsoft has explained some details of this initiative. At the moment they have created multiple systems. Programs, in some cases to allow doctors to combat diseases and cells resistant to cancer. “Our research teams want to make progress in understanding the roles of genetics,” they say on their website.

The objective of this program is to give scientists better information in order to understand cancer and develop more personalised and effective treatments. Because of its computing capacity, Microsoft can accumulate a lot of information and therefore give advantage to doctors on the most devastating disease of our time.

Microsoft researchers say they have made great efforts to make their systems easy to use even for people without any qualification or interest in technology and computing.

Microsoft insist that the mission is not to cure cancer. The article published much emphasises the word “solve”. The idea of this program is not to find what doctors have been looking for, but to give weapons and artificial intelligence to respond to the needs of the disease.
